What would you do if gasoline were $6 a gallon?
Would you buy a more efficient car? Would you stop using a car and take the bus/walk/bike instead? Would you move closer to work? Would you cut back in some other way?
Burning fossil fuels like gasoline is causing a crisis of global warming. This has effects like rising sea levels, more extreme weather events, disruption of agriculture, extinctions of animal species that can't adapt, etc. Also, the stuff we do to make climate change worse, also makes regular air pollution worse, causing athsma and lung cancer.
There are already countries where gasoline costs the equivalent of $6 dollars or more because of government taxes (e.g. Britain and Japan). They have lower rates of vehicle ownership and more efficient cars.
I say it's time for the U.S. to increase its fuel taxes. We should start small and raise the tax over time, because without $6 gas, I have no idea how we're going to save the environment, and ourselves.
