I'm a big fan of dense urban development that mixes land uses. It's great for the environment, and makes it easy to live without a car. However, I realize that my ideas aren't perfect. One issue that tends to come up when you go dense and mix the uses is noise. In apartment buildings you share walls with your neighbors so you kind of count on them (or your ability no negotiate with them) not to be jerks. When you mix uses, you sometimes get issues. I live next to a parking lot that serves businesses that close at 2AM. That's been lame many a time.
Have you encountered noise problems living in apartments or from mixed land uses? Can buildings or neighborhoods be designed or regulated better to reduce noise? Or is suburbia the only way to increase the odds of a good night's sleep?
