Learning From Campuses: CSULB

http://daf.csulb.edu/maps/img/maps/2009.gif

I'm not going to give you a complete overview of California State University Long Beach (CSULB). The main thing I want to do is point out how much of the campus is dedicated to parking, and how that's slowly starting to change.

Everything colored brown and pink on the map is parking. Notice that the land area dedicated to parking is about equal to the area dedicated to academic buildings, and larger than the area dedicated to sports facilities. Is this a college with a parking lot, or a parking lot with a college?

Parking structures 2 and 3 are new, four level affairs. They've made room for a new Student Recreation and Wellness Center (marked SRWC on the map in black). It's being built green, receiving a LEED Silver rating, and sits on land that used to be a surface parking lot.

This is a great example of taking space from cars giving it to people. Well done, CSULB.
