In the Shadow of Freeways

I've lived close to freeways pretty much all of my life. By close, I mean close enough to walk. Close enough to hear the river of cars every night before I go to sleep.

What effects has this had on my health? I don't know with scientific precision. But I do know that when I was about 12 years old I had athsma. One day I was playing basketball and an athsma attack hit. I stopped in my tracks, doubled over and tried to breathe . . . but I couldn't.

Athsma is like drowning. You work your lungs with all your might and a trickle of air comes in. At that moment, I wasn't sure if I would live or die.

Have a nice drive to work.
